Science 8- Jags had a special presentation about depression and suicide awareness.

Wood 7-  Machine tool safety is nearing completion.  Jags are starting bird house construction.

Math 8- Jags went over a quiz on rates and ratios.  They then continued with percent which they were introduced to yesterday.

Science 7- Jags reviewed density and had mystery substances to identify via their densities.  Homeworkà review how to calculate density.

Wood 8-  Machine tool safety is nearing completion, and model house construction has begun.

Math 8- Jags wrote a quiz on rates and ratios.  They were then introduced to percent.

Science 7- Students were assigned different cancers to research during weekly computer lab allotted time.  Creating an attractive and informative pamphlet is the summative task.

Science 8.  Biology unit test day.  Student done early started reading up on next unit- Fluids.  Homework- finish questions 1-6 on fluids (W/S)  in section 4.1.

Math 7- Jags reviewed addition and simplification of fractions and were introduced to multiplication of fractions.  Homeworkà  finish Cowboy W/S on multiplication of fractions.

Math 8- Jags reviewed unit rates and ratios.  Homework- finish practice quiz on ratios and rates in preparation for real quiz tomorrow.

Science 7- Jags tested their bridges made on Friday.  Students then shifted back into their unit on matter and discussed density.  Homeworkà Finish Golden yellow W/S 4.5 on density.

Science 8-  Jags reviewed unit 1 today via a practice test.  Test was reviewed.  Student write Biology unit test tomorrow.  Know your body systems & cells.  A hand written reference sheet is permitted during test.

Math 7- Jags reviewed strategies for adding fractions.  Equivalent fractions and proportions was wrapped up.  Next and last topics are multiplying and dividing fraction.  Homework—Jump Math Booklet should be finished up to end of page 90 Green Booklet.  Jags ended class with a math applications challenge to end the week.  Build the strongest bridge to span 40cm with 1 meter of tape and 50 drinking straws.

Woodwork  8  Exploding model house construction has begun.  Introductory projects complete.

Science 7- Jags were introduced to their unit on Chemistry.  Today jabs learnt about matter, mass, states of change in matter, and volume.  Homeworkà finish salmon colored W/S 4.3 on Mass and Volume.

Math 8-  Jags reviewed Ratio, Rates and Unit Rates.   Class was then introduced to proportions and how to know if items are proportional.  H/W à finish page 134 & questions 3, a,b,c,d,e,f on page 135.  (Exercise set 4.2)-pink W/S.

Science 8-  Jags went over the key parts to the immune system and the different immune responses.  A slide show of the different lines of defense was presented.  Homework à finish ‘Check you Understanding’ Section 3.6 on the immune system-(yellow W/S).

Woodwork 7-  First day for new rotation.  Students introduced to class projects and workshop safety.

Math 8-  Students went over their fractions tests written last class.  After all questions from the test were taken class began to look at their next unit on Ratio, Rates and Proportions.   H/W à finish questions 1 & 2 on page 129 (Exercise set 4.1)-yellow W/S.

Science 8-  Jags reviewed digestion, excretion, & body systems.  Each student was responsible for different review questions to report to the class.  Jags then drew a model human body and labelled different minerals that are needed for body function to their associated body part.  The food sources of these minerals was also noted.  Homeworkà Read section 3.6 on Immune Systems-“Protecting the Body”.

Math 7-  Students had an assembly today- MADD.

Science 7- Jags wrote a science test today on ecosystems.  Homeworkà finish endangered species project due Tuesday Dec 2.

Woodwork  8- Last day of exploratory.  Jags finished jewelry boxes and helped mill lumber for a PAC sponsored project.  Come see me if you need extra shop time to finish your project.

Math 8- Jags wrote a fractions test today.  Homeworkà Read intro to Unit 5- Percent, Ratio, & Rate on page 232 of Math Makes Sense.

Woodwork 8-  Students today were given a demo on how to glue up the tops and bottoms of their jewelry boxes.  Next step- sanding and finishing.

Science 8- Jags had a quiz today based on their excretion homework.  Jags wrapped up excretion and discussed digestion and food.  Homeworkà Finish digestion questions #12-18 in the ‘Check you understanding’ WS (white paper).

Math 8- Students went over the method for finding LCM’s.  Jags then completed questions on adding and subtracting fractions.  Homeworkà finish 44+45 in exercise set 1.6 (salmon colour).

Science 7- Computer lab booked for research on endangered species of students choice.  Powerpoint presentations for this research are due Tuesday Dec 2.  Homeworkà  Study chapter three- test fri & put finishing touches on endangered species ppt.

Math 7- Jags reviewed long division, and prime factorization.  Students were then introduced to fractions.  Homeworkà finish pages 72-74 in your fractions booklet (green)

Science 8- Jags reviewed the content on circulation and respiration covered thus far.  Class ended with an introduction to the Excretory & Digestive Systems.  Homework—questions 1-11 in your excretion & digestion W/S.  Also, remember that your global warming survey and correlated graph is due Wednesday Nov 26. 

Math 8-  Students again reviewed  division of mixed fractions and had 3 problems to solve in class that involved both multiplication and division of problem.  Identifying what the word problems are asking for was reviewed and stressed.  Pink booklets assigned for homework were checked for completion.  Class then learnt how to find the LCM for 2 or more numbers in readying fractions for addition and subtraction.  HomeworkàFinish page 43 in exercise set 1.6 (salmon color) on adding and subtracting fractions.  Fractions will be wrapped up after this last section.

Science 7- Students as a review exercise wrote a practice test on chapter three.  Students will write a real chapter three test on Thursday.  Start making your 1 page of notes permitted for the test.  Jags ended class working on their town planning assignment- Forest Grove.  Homework- read the ‘Pesky Perch’ case study distributed in class and ready yourself for tomorrows last day of research on the endangered species of your choice.  Students are to create a PowerPoint slideshow from a template based on their findings.

Math 7-  Jags reviewed multiplying and dividing decimals from last week and from their homework.   Jags then tackled long division of whole numbers and decimals.  Homeworkà finish  pages 159-162 on long division- (pink booklet).

Apologies for the delay in getting this out; parent teacher interviews took priority last night.  Students had a half day.

Science 8- Jags had their weekly computer lab time to correlate their survey data into graphs using Microsoft excel or Google spreadsheets.  Class ended with an applied math- science challenge to end the week with.  Students had 30 minutes of build time to construct with a partner a straw bridge to span 40 cm and hold as much weight as possible.  The winning bridge held 4 lbs with a few that made it to 3.5 lbs.  Homework—finish blue w/s on respiration and circulation for Monday Nov 24, and your global warming survey and correlated graph is due Wednesday Nov 26.   Next week we’ll tackle excretion and might start looking at the immune system.

Science 7- Jags today reviewed the history of the concept of the ecological footprint and methods to reduce their consumption.  Class ended with part one of a two part town planning activity for the fictional town of Forest Grove.  Jags with a partner have 8 different needs to address in their plan for the town.

Math 8-  Students reviewed  division of mixed fractions.  Jags then moved on to Estimating with fractions.  Homeworkà Finish pink booklet 1.5 pages 36&37.  Also complete questions 4-10 in Math Makes Sense on page 145.

Math 8-  Students reviewed  division of fractions in word problems.  Jags then were introduced to dividing mixed fractions.  Homework- Finish Exercise set 1.5 pages 34&35.

Science 7-Jags today learnt about the 100 mile diet and efforts and movements to eat locally to reduce our ecological impacts. The problems with our highly industrialized farm industry and why small scale farming is being phased out was also discussed.  Students ended the day researching an endangered animal.  Endangered animal reports are due Tuesday Nov 25.   Continue monitoring your consumption for your Ecological Footprint task due Tuesday Nov 18.

Math 8-  Students reviewed multiplication of fractions in word problems.  Jags then were introduced to dividing fractions.  Homework- Finish Exercise set 1.4 pages 28&29.

Science 8-  Jags mimicked the work of a heart through the four liters bucket challenge.  Class went over circulation homework from Friday and were given a circulation rap song as a reward.  Homeworkà  finish circulation and respirations review questions for Wednesday Nov 19.

Math 7—Jags today applied their factoring to reducing fractions.  They then continued with their decimal study and transitioned into adding and subtracting decimals.  HomeworkàJump Math adding and subtracting decimals up to end of Page 149.  (pink booklet).

Science 7-Jags today learnt about ecosystem reconstruction after pollution.  The Echiman river in Quebec was discussed as a case study.  Homeworkà Find out what water bodies Victoria depends upon.  Alsoà Continue monitoring your consumption for your Ecological Footprint task due Tuesday Nov 18.

Woodwork 8-  Students were given a demo on cutting the keys for their miter joints and how to make the separation cuts on their boxes.   Jewelry box construction will continue through next week with some students finishing their wood with stain or clear coat.

Science 7—Jags today in class discussed and read about efforts to preserve, conserve, and restore ecosystems.  Canadian examples were discussed including our own Gorge waterway.  Class ended with a discussion around the dangers created with global warming.  Austrailia’s beaches, our pine beetle, and the heat waves and cities were discussed as examples.  Homeworkà  Finish conserving and preserving ecosystems W/S.

Math 8- Multiplying fractions & Prime factorization to simplify was reviewed again.  Jags were introduced to the related task of multiplying mixed fractions.  Homeworkà  finish ‘Multiplying mixed fractions’ W/S (blue copy).

Woodwork 8-  Students were given two demos.  Demo one- how to safely use the table router, and why we’re using it.  Demo two- how to measure lengths with miter ends, and how to glue up miter joints squarely.

Science 7—Jags learnt about foreign or non-native species and how they affect ecosystems.  A week long assignment on tallying resources used was distributed and will be due Tuesday Nov 18.   Homeworkà get in outstanding assignments and commence ‘ecological footprint’ activity.

 Math 7:  Decimal place value was briefly covered.  Majority of class was lost to Remembrance day assembly.

Science 8 -  Students reviewed and corrected their chapter 2 quizzes.  The human aspect to this biology unit on systems began.  Students were introduced to the respiratory system today.  Homeworkà finish matching W/S and questions 1-4 on page 67 of your Science Probe text.

Science 7—Jags had their weekly science lab time.  Students analyzed their bacteria growth from last weeks swab and the corresponding 3 variables added to the mix. Students researched answers to their bacteria lab follow up questions.  Homeworkà finish bacteria lab for Wed Nov 12 and catch up on outstanding work.

 Math 7:  LCM’s & GCF’s were stressed today in Jump Math.  Homework- Finish Jump Math pages up to end of page 57 (yellow sheet).

Woodwork 8:  Outhouse construction is wrapping up.  Students have begun jewelry box construction. , Some Jags laminated up their milled wood today.

Science 8—Jags had their weekly hour in the computer lab.  Students researched answers to their bacteria lab follow up questions.  Students also wrote their chapter 2 quizzes today.  Homeworkà Creature assignment due tomorrow, & bacteria lab write up due Monday Nov 10.

 Math 7:  Fractions continued.  Students tried some work out of ‘Jump Math’ to supplement Math Makes Sense.  Today the focus was on factors and multiples.  Homework à finish Jump Math pa&37.

Woodwork 7:  Birdhouses construction is wrapping up.  Students have begun ‘pig’ cutting board construction using maple.  Some Jags laminated up their wood today and will be cutting out next week.

Science 7—Jags had their weekly hour in the computer lab.  Students researched ideas for their ‘creature assignment’ and or were typing up lab reports.  Homeworkà Finish ‘Creature’ assignment for Friday; hand drawing and paragraph following criteria given.

 Math 8:  Multiplication of fractions continued today.  Students tried some work out of ‘Jump Math’ to supplement Math Makes Sense.  Homework à finish Jump Math Multiplication of fractions Page# 36, 37.  Grade 8’s have a chapter 2 science quiz tomorrow.  Remember to study and create a review sheet.

Woodwork 8:  Students were given instruction on the first steps of constructing the jewelry box.  Safety around the Jointer and Planer was reviewed before students broke out stock.  Students were milling their lumber to size and or finished up their model exploding outhouses.

Science 7—Jags discussed habitat loss and its effect on ecosystems.  A clip on Canada’s green initiatives was viewed.  Homeworkà Questions 1-5 page 71

 Math 8:  Addition and subtraction of fractions was mastered today.  Students were introduced to multiplication of fractions.  Homeworkà WB Pages 54-57.

Science 8:  Jags had a classroom debate over genetic engineering and watched a clip on superbugs and their toll in Canada.  Homeworkà Chapter 2 review page 62, questions 1-12. 

Math 7:  Addition and subtraction of fractions was worked on.  Students learnt to compare fractions to decimals.  Homeworkà WB page 51.

Science 7—Jags completed a chart in class on the different types of pollution with examples.  Reducing our ecological footprint was discussed.  H/W à finish W/S 3.2 “How people affect ecosystems”

 Math 8:  Addition and subtraction of fractions was assessed to gauge where students are.  Review of the concepts and a quiz took place.  H/W à Addition & Subtraction W/S.

Science 8:  Class played “pass it on” an activity to display how disease spreads.  Immunity and the immune systems was discussed.  Homeworkà pg 56 q 1-4.

Math 7:  Addition and subtraction of fractions was assessed to gauge where students are.  Review of the concepts and a quiz took place.  H/W à Addition & Subtraction W/S.

Science 7-  Jags completed sourcing their bacteria for their petri dishes.  Next week students will see which groups bacteria grew most and who had their hypothesis on the three variables correct.  A new ‘Spooky’creative assignment was distributed out today.  Students are to create a creature never seen before and to explain it ensuring they’ve followed the criteria.  Due Friday Nov 7.  Homeworkà Catch up on outstanding work and start your Bacteria lab report, and your creature never seen before report.

 Science 8-  Students go a new creative/imaginative assignment.  Students started research on new assignment- Create your own creature.  Due next Friday Nov 7.  Students in second block completed parts 3 and 4 of their bacteria lab.  Class ended looking at cell specialization.  Homework Questions 1-3 on page 53.

Woodwork 7:  Students continued construction of Bird’s bird house.  Up next:  Themed cutting boards.

Science 7—Jags completed as a class a chart on humans and their interactions with ecosystems.  Sustainability and biodiversity were discussed with various different visual representations.  Homeworkà  mini poster that explains biodiversity and sustainability.

 Math 8:  Jags continued learning about fractions.  Equivalent fractions, lowest common multiples, adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions and modelling fractions were reviewed.  Homeworkà WB page 53 + Equivalent fractions worksheet.

Woodwork 8:  Students continued construction of exploding outhouses.  Jewelry box construction up next.

 

 

Science 7—Class got back and went over their chapter 2 quizzes.  Jags then were introduced to their next chapter of study- The role of Humans in Ecosystems.  Comparison and contrast between aboriginal and European perspectives towards nature was discussed.  Homeworkà Questions 1-3 on page 61.

Science 7—Class discussed the water cycle and watched a clip about how water cycles and has been for millions of years.  Jags then started diagraming the Carbon and Water cycles.  Homeworkà finish diagraming the two cycles on the 11x17 paper provided.

Math 7:  Students completed the integers section on diagramming with number lines.  Jags started Integer review.  The WB unit review was completed in class.  Homeworkà complete the practice test on page 81 of your textbook.

Math 8:  Exponents and order of operations were reviewed.  Jags started unit review in their workbooks.  Homeworkà finish Unit 2 review in WB pg42-46.

Science 8-  Students finished notes on digestions and watched a short clip on digestion.  Students then moved on to reading about Unicellular organisms and how they digest.  Homeworkà questions 1-7 page 47.

Science 7—Class discussed the move in the US to increase fracking as a means to limit dependence on Alberta tar sands.  Pros and Cons and a chart were completed.  Class ended discussing how this all ties into the Carbon cycle.  What carbon is and how it cycles was discussed.  Class ended watching clip on Carbon cycle (4minutes).  HomeworkàRemember to bring pencil crayons or felts for coloring your diagrams tomorrow.  Also finish lab reports on Fridays worm lab and previous Fridays yeast lab if not already complete.  Remember labs are to have the following:  question, hypothesis, materials, procedure, data chart, graph, analysis, conclusion.

Math 7:  Students completed were taught how to demonstrate integer subtraction using number lines.   A review of BEDMAS and order of operations with integers was also covered.  Homework- WB page 42 and W/S “Why is the nose in the middle of your face”.

Math 8:  Class completed an order of operations or BEDMAS review.  Exponents were introduced and their place in the order of operations was stressed.  Homeworkà finish exponents worksheet.

Science 8-  Students had an additional 15 min to finish last week’s chapter 1 quiz.  Quizzes were marked in class.  Jags then transitioned into learning more about the digestive system than the small chart of data provided in their texts.  Homeworkà  Finish lab reports;  should be done by latest, Thursday Oct 23.

Science 7-  Class started with a review of the expectations for their Northern Gateway Pipeline project.  Three example projects were shown so student could better comprehend scope.  A 10 min CBC documentary on the PR war around the pipeline was viewed.  Students were informed of the federal governments’ stance on the pipeline was discussed.  Second block- students transitioned into their second science lab for the year on the response of earthworms Phylum Annelida  to external stimuli.  Students are currently studying ecology and earthworms are a very important part in an ecosystem.  .  Homeworkà Lab report write ups.  Get a lab report in for lab #1 on yeast growth from last Friday if you haven’t already and start putting together your lab report from today’s experiment- lab#3 for Monday. 

 

 Wood Technology  8:   Students started breaking out stock for project 2-Exploding Outhouse.  Students were reminded to bring back signed forms and course fee ASAP.
